Shaping Sustainable Futures: Insights from the 15th IFSA Conference

Mark your calendars for a wonderful event set to take place from 30th June to 4th July 2024 in Trapani, Sicily, Italy – the 15th International Farming Systems Association (IFSA) conference. This conference promises to be a gathering of minds dedicated to exploring systemic change for sustainable futures, with a focus on crucial topics such as postgrowth farming systems.

One highlight of the conference is the keynote presentation titled “Postgrowth farming systems: critique, visions, pathways” by Giuseppe Feola. Giuseppe Feola is Associate Professor of Social Change for Sustainability at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University. He studies grassroots and community-led transformations towards agrifood models that, not depending on perpetual economic growth, aim to sustain human wellbeing and the ecological basis of life. He is a member and co-founder of the Dutch degrowth network Ontgroei, and an editorial board member of Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions and Sustainability Science.

Adding to the excitement, our colleague Jessica Duncan will be serving as a discussant for this presentation. Jessica, Associate Professor in the Politics of Food System Transformations within the Rural Sociology Group.

With a PhD in Food Policy from City University, London, Jessica has dedicated her career to pioneering new ways of understanding and designing food governance processes that support just and sustainable transformations. Her involvement as an ambassador and founding member of the Centre for Unusual Collaborations, along with her editorial role in the journal Sociologia Ruralis, underscores her commitment to driving positive change in food systems.

The 15th IFSA conference presents a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, gain insights from industry leaders, and network with like-minded individuals passionate about shaping sustainable futures. We encourage all stakeholders invested in the future of agriculture and food systems to attend this transformative event.

Stay tuned for updates and insights from the conference as we collectively work towards a more just and sustainable future.
