Monsanto is the world leader in genetically modified organisms, as well as one of the most controversial corporations in industrial history. This centuryold empire has created some of the most toxic products ever sold, including polychlorinated biphenyls and the herbicide Agent Orange. Based on a painstaking investigation, The World According to Monsanto puts together the pieces of the company’s history, calling on hitherto unpublished documents and numerous first-hand accounts. Today, Monsanto likes to style itself as a “life sciences” company. It claims it wants to solve world hunger while protecting the environment. But the history of Monsanto is filled with disturbing episodes. Behind its clean, green image, Monsanto is tightening its grasp on the world seed market, striving for market supremacy to the detriment of food security and the global environment.Nikita Shahbazi of FIAN Netherlands will provide a short introduction on the film and on the Human Right to Food.

Dick Hollander (voormalig biologische tuinder en wijnbouwer) introduceert het boek ‘Tegen beter weten in’ over de geschiedenis van de biologische landbouw, en geeft zijn visie op de huidige stand van zaken rondom landbouw en voeding. Joost Visser (onderzoeker) licht in een reactie toe dat elke soort landbouw, welke ook, afhangt van de goede diensten van het ecosysteem en de bodem. Hij vraagt zich af: kunnen we eigenlijk wel anders dan ‘biologisch boeren’? Inclusief vertoning van een korte film over een jonge, innovatieve biologische boer in Nederland.

The talented chefs of Vreemde Streken serve a healthy and delicious, locally sourced eco dinner for 10 euro (children half-price). Singer-songwriter Henk Boogaard will treat you to an intermezzo of comic songs on fruits and vegetables. At 20.00h we will screen the ‘gastronomic pleasure’ film Calabria to California (http://vimeo.com/20474542). The beautiful film ‘Calabria to California’ is set in two regions blessed with a Mediterranean climate: Calabria, Italy and California, USA. Villagers from Castelsilano and artisan food producers from northern California compare their stories of pleasure, modernity, knowledge, loss, business economics, and the future. The two regions are distinguished by different histories of agricultural knowledge and business practices, but share a passion for food-culture, and a sense of loss in the livelihoods and values of people today. The two narratives are shared side by side. After the film, the director Jennifer Kendzior will be available for a Q&A session.

Gaining Control over our Food Systems: a training on the Human Right to Food, Agroecology and Food Sovereignty is an intensive training weekend for people who would like to learn more about concepts that can help make agriculture and food systems more sustainable and democratic and who are eager to engage in food and farming campaigns.
