FOODLINKS final conference – Sustainable food communities of practice

On 16 October 2013 the FOODLINKS team organised the  conference Sustainable food communities of practice – meet and eat to present the results of its  three-year project. The conference focused on “Good cooperation between science, society and policy promotes sustainable food consumption and production” looking more particularly into:

  • How short food supply chains can effectively work as policy tools;
  • How to maximise the benefits of sustainable public procurement of food;
  • How to implement sustainable food strategies in European cities.

The conference made a special effort to actively engage the participants’ experience and knowledge in the field, and to verify the findings from the project. The conference experiences are summarised in the video below:

Growing farmers – video on new farmers in Long Island

This is a 16-min video about the developments in farming in Long Island. Having great soils and an agriculture history, the setting lends itself for farming activities. However, land prices are a clear barrier for newcomers. The video also talks about new farmers trying to make it in the agricultural world from making a living, facing their romanticized preconceptions of life as a farmer, to breaking stereotypes of who can be a farmer.

Master thesis by Lise Alix nominated for International Science shop price!

During the International event of Science Shops in Europe, The Inspiration days 2012, an award will be given to the author of the best Science Shop report. The Wageningen Science Shop nominated 3 projects from Wageningen University. Lise Alix, completed the Master International Development Studies at Wageningen University with a thesis research on an allotment park in Ede at Rural Sociology commissioned by the Science Shop of Wageningen University. Lise Alix is one of the nominees. Her thesis is in Dutch and called “Zo tuinieren zij dus“ (That is how they garden), but has an English Summary. The thesis was examined as excellent. The research by Lise was part of a larger project on ‘Tuinenpark Koekelt’ (allotmentpark De Koekelt), see the project site for more information. The final Science Shop report “Welkom op Tuinenpark De Koekelt” is largely based on the nominated thesis. Tim Lang – key note speaker Food Film Festival 2012

In an earlier post the Food Film Festival 2012, organized by the Youth Food Movement, was announced. The key note on sustainable food provision by Tim Lang, Professor Food Policy at the  City University London, was one of the higlights. A video of his key note has been uploaded by Gerbrand Oudenaarde at Vimeo (see video below), including a short  review in Dutch. Four more DERREG films: 9 films in total

Earlier I reported (see post) on the five short films made of the DERREG case study areas. Next to  films of Comarca de Verin (Spain), Alytus (Lithuania), Westerkwartier (Netherlands), Roscommon (Ireland) and Regierungsbezirk Dresden (Germany), four more have been uploaded at the You Tube DERREG Films Channel:  a second one on Regieringsbezirk Dresden, one on Saarland (Germany), the South Moravian region (Czech Republic) and one on Oevre Norrland (Sweden).
