How to feed our cities in the future?

Today’s food system is in the line of fire. The advocates of an industrial food production coupled with a global economy are diametrically opposed to the supporters of local and ecological farming. Both parties defend their views with an almost religious belief. But the future of food is also the future of mankind.

Stroom Den Haag brings the two opposing parties together and into court. Experts from various fields and from different generations (from farmers to philosophers, from retailers to architects, from scientists to activists, from policymakers to politicians) will present their views on how to feed our cities in the future. Starting point is a threesome of visionary scenarios developed by artists/architects in connection with Stroom Den Haag’s ‘Foodprint’ program: Park Supermarket, City Pig and Foodscape Schilderswijk.

The tribunal concludes with a closing manifesto by a jury, stating how we can develop a sustainable food system for the city of the future. This manifesto will be published on the Stroom website and will be sent to all stakeholders. The setup of the food tribunal is in keeping with The Hague’s international profile as the City of Peace and Justice.

Tim Lang – key note speaker Food Film Festival 2012

In an earlier post the Food Film Festival 2012, organized by the Youth Food Movement, was announced. The key note on sustainable food provision by Tim Lang, Professor Food Policy at the  City University London, was one of the higlights. A video of his key note has been uploaded by Gerbrand Oudenaarde at Vimeo (see video below), including a short  review in Dutch. Samen ga je aan de slag met oplossingen voor de voedselproblematiek en schud je je omgeving wakker middels Facebook, Twitter, weblogs, videos en reportages.

Learning on Food Security from a regional systems perspective

The ETC Foundation is looking for a volunteer; this may well be the start of an intersting career! You can also contact our education people if you would like to do your master thesis on this topic.

Food Security (FS) is a hot topic in the Dutch and international development debate today. Therefore, learning about FS interventions has priority amongst organisations like ETC.

ETC is involved in a Learn-and-Work trajectory called “Learning on Food Security from a Regional Systems Perspective”. In this trajectory, two learning questions (see below) will be addressed through three case studies in different regions in East-Africa. These case studies will be 1. jointly prepared in a preparatory event, 2. then implemented by organisations in East-Africa in their respective regions, 3. analyzed jointly in an international workshop and then 4. reported and presented both within and outside ETC and partner network. Food Film Festival 2012, March 16-18

The Food Film Festival 2012, March 16 – 18 in Amsterdam, is an event initaited and organised by the Dutch branch of the Youth Food Movement. It promises an interesting mix of films, workshops, events and even a specific food festival for kids. See the programme at the website or the pdf here. Tim Lang will close the festival with a key note.
